Continental (New York) Sour

The New York Sour, also known as the Southern Whiskey Sour or Continental Sour, is a slight variation on a classic sour with the addition of a red wine float. This process became quite popular in Chicago in the 1880s and the bartender who may have created the cocktail said in an 1883 interview “men who drink… sours expect a claret (red wine) at every bar, and when it is not put in, they ask for it.”

Recipe

2 oz rye
0.5 oz lemon
0.5 oz simple syrup
0.5 oz red wine
Garnish: orange twist
Prep: Shake everything except the wine. Strain over fresh ice. Float the wine on top and garnish.
