Two years before the Spanish-American War, before the U.S. Army assisted the island of Cuba in its independence, an American mining engineer named Jennings Cox created this cocktail in a hurry when he realized that he had no gin for guests. It has been bastardized several times throughout its more than 100 year lifespan, but the original is a total more than the sum of its parts.
