French 75

When French and American members of the Lafayette Escadrille battalion had leave from the trenches, they frequented the bar at the Hotel Chatham in Paris. There they celebrated their victories with Champagne, cognac, and/or gin and named the mixture (mingled with lemon and sugar) after the French Army’s 75 mm. field gun. The drink (with its current name and recipe) developed over the 1920s, though similar drinks date to the 19th century.

1 oz gin or Brandy
0.5 oz lemon Juice
0.5 oz simple syrup
3 oz sparkling wine
Garnish: lemon twist
Prep: Shake everything except the sparkling wine. Fill a coupe ½ way with sparkling wine. Strain shaken mixture into glass. Garnish.
