This cocktail dates back to 1915, although its history is very murky. It famously appears in Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises and is a principal cocktail in David Embury’s The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks. Stories abound about a gambler who was shot in 1912 by a hit man who, together with several politicians, pinned the hit on another politician. This now-famous hit man, Bald Jack Rose, finally claimed something – the invention of this cocktail. It is disputable, to say the least.
