David Wondrich refers to the Knickerbocker as “the spiritual progenitor of the Tiki drink” in Imbibe! The history is pretty murky, but we do see it referenced in the first cocktail book ever written, Jerry Thomas’ The Bon Vivant’s Guide.
2 oz Aged Rum
.5 oz Crème de Cassis
.5 oz Triple Sec
.75 oz lemon juice
Garnish: Fresh berries in season
Preparation: Shake all ingredients over ice and pour directly into rocks glass. Garnish.
