The date and location of the Mojito is subject to debate, but we say it’s the perfect way to kick off Derby or end a hot summer’s day. Word has it, Sir Francis Drake needed a remedy for dysentery and scurvy that had taken over his ship after a successful raid at Cartagena de Indias. South American Indians were known for their remedies for various tropical illnesses. He sent a small crew ashore while anchored at Cuba and they returned to the ship with the beginnings of a popular drink – the Mojito, and a cure.
- 10-12 mint leaves
- 1.5 oz white rum
- 0.5 oz simple syrup
- 1 oz lime juice
- Garnish: Mint sprig & 1 dash Angostura bitters
- Prep: Shake all but the soda. Strain over crushed ice, top with soda and garnish.
