James Pimm first produced his now eponymous gin fruit cup (an English style drink of a spirit infused with herbs and fruit, meant to be consumed with a soft drink mixer) in 1823. He served it as a digestive aid in a tankard known as a “No. 1 Cup” – hence the name of the modern cocktail. There have been 5 other Pimm’s “cups” made from other base spirits, but No. 1 is the only version sold outside the United Kingdom. It is the staple cocktail of Wimbledon.
