Although this cocktail first appears in How to Mix Drinks, it is better summarized when Harry Craddock describes it: “The ‘Smash’ is in effect a Julep on a small plan.” Many modern recipes will call for the addition of lemon wedges to be muddled with the mint, but originally is was a fast fix of a julep.
2 oz rye or bourbon
0.5 oz simple syrup
2 dashes Angostura
½ lemon, quartered
8-10 mint leaves
Garnish: mint sprig/lemon wheel
Prep: Muddle lemon and mint. Shake and pour dirty.
